Social Activities

FEP encourages provider social interactions outside of the clinical setting; these can be a powerful tool to create a community of clinicians and families that can often replicate support systems, which for many new employees are minimal.

The group has formed and funded a Social Activities Committee, consisting of spouses, whose mandate is to provide activities where clinicians and families can become better acquainted with their peers. A diverse set of monthly activities is planned to provide social interaction among families in FEP.

FEP has grown through the years and at present is one of the larger, truly independent emergency physician groups in the nation. We believe that once we serve the best interests of our patients, secondary rewards will follow. Our primary duty is reflected in our Mission Statement, "Dedicated to excellence in Emergency Medical Care".

Shifts

Physicians are cored at each facility, but may be called upon to work at any location. Shifts are nine or ten hours depending on the campus structure. Full time contractual minimum hours are 138 monthly averages, on an annual basis.

FEP has established a Mentor Program whereby new providers work clinical shifts with a mentor (a veteran provider) to learn the process of a specific ED. We believe the Mentor Program is a wonderful asset for FEP and our new providers.

About Orlando

Orlando is a growing city with easy access to an international airport, world-renowned theme parks, dozens of acclaimed golf courses, famous beaches, Cape Canaveral and the Space Shuttle. Orlando boasts a multi-cultural community and excellent school systems.

Florida currently has no state income tax, which means that most providers moving into Florida do get an automatic raise if they leave a taxable state. Housing and cost of living are most affordable and FEP offers realtor services and banking/mortgage options.

Emergency Department Structure

To handle the complexity of local campus Emergency Departments, FEP has instituted a policy of covering each campus with a specific core group of providers. While some in the group do rotate to all campuses, most providers work a majority of their clinical shifts at a single campus (the "core campus") with occasional shifts at other campuses.

Each facility has a Medical Director who is responsible for day-to-day management of FEP's activities at that campus. The Medical Director interacts with the Florida Hospital campus administrator via routine meetings and promotes contact and communication with the local medical staff.

The FEP Chief Medical Officer is the Chairman of the Florida Hospital Emergency Department Staff, and interfaces between the Florida Hospital Medical Executive Committee and FEP's clinicians, as well as with the Medical Directors. The Chairman supervises Clinical Quality Improvement and Process Improvement initiatives jointly executed by FEP and Florida Hospital's medical staff.

Medical Practice Philosophy

Since its earliest history, FEP has provided a work environment that provides individual practitioners with a flexible work schedule. The group has always valued the opportunity to work in the ED, while at the same time making time for family and recreational pursuits. This contributes to reducing provider burnout through constant exposure to what is truly a stressful work environment.

Much effort is directed to arranging CME meeting time and vacations when possible, without severely impacting the other members of the group. Quality of life is truly considered in setting clinical schedules.

FEP provides an excellent compensation and benefits package. This includes a generous CME stipend (to encourage maintenance of Florida and ACEP's continuing education requirements), payment of ACEP, FMA, and FAPA dues by the group, company paid health insurance, and more recently a Flexible Spending Account option to allow pretax benefits to be tailored to the individual's needs.

Recent employees have come to recognize that receiving benefits on a pre-tax basis positively impacts the total return when compared to the packages offered by similar groups.
